Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

In March 2023, SSD began implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to gain access to Microsoft applications (Outlook, Teams, Power BI, and other Microsoft applications). Because Technology Services is working hard to secure data across all platforms, additional applications will require MFA in the future.  Staff have already been using MFA to access Lawson.

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a layer of protection to the sign-in process. When accessing accounts or apps, staff provide additional identify verification.

  • Multi-factor authentication requires two or more methods of verification factors for access which are:

    • Knowledge (Passwords, PIN)

    • Place (Physical Location)

    • Time (MS Authenticator)

    • Possession (Security Key)

Why is SSD implementing MFA?

  • As cybersecurity remains a priority for organizations worldwide, school districts are obligated to adopt strategies that protect their staff and students. One of those strategies is multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA is a requirement for SSD to maintain our cybersecurity insurance.

What to Expect

  • Authentication is done automatically when accessing Microsoft applications when on an SSD or partner district campus.

  • Once you have set up MFA, you will find that any time you are logging in and not on an SSD or partner district campus (for example, if you login from home or a meeting that isn’t at a school) you will be required to confirm your identity through your chosen MFA method. Reverification will be required weekly for that network

  • Staff who do not work on an SSD or partner district campus (VSP, Homebound, SNAP), will be required to verify often as they are frequently on wi-fi networks that cannot be guaranteed as secure networks. Re-authentication is required anytime you change networks.
