IEP Amendment and IEP Correction Events Frequently Asked Questions

This page answers questions frequently asked about completing an IEP Amendment or IEP Correction.

What is the difference between an IEP Amendment and an IEP Correction?

  • An IEP Amendment is used to document a CHANGE to a decision made by the IEP team at the IEP meeting or in a subsequent amendment. An example would be changing the location of a service from the Special Education setting to the Regular Education setting. An Amendment requires the agreement of the parent/guardian/age 18+ student, the representative of the component district, and a representative of SSD. An Amendment Form must be completed for all Amendments.

  • An IEP Correction is used to CORRECT an error (for example a clerical error) discovered after an IEP or Amendment is locked. An example would be a service or goal agreed to at the meeting but not entered prior to locking the IEP.

What dates are used when creating the IEP Amendment or IEP Correction Event?

  • The Scheduled Date and the Due Date of the IEP Amendment and IEP Correction events are entered automatically and cannot be changed.

    • The Scheduled Date is the Meeting Date of the original IEP even if other Amendments or Corrections have been completed.

    • The Due Date is 10 days from the date the event is created.

Can an IEP Amendment or IEP Correction Event be created if the Annual IEP is in “PENDING ACTIVE” status?

  • Yes. An Annual IEP in PENDING ACTIVE status can be amended or corrected. “PENDING ACTIVE” means the Initiation Date is in the future. If the Initiation Date is incorrect, it can be corrected immediately as long as the Notice of Meeting is correct.

Can an IEP Amendment or IEP Correction Event be created if the Initial IEP is in “PENDING” status?

  • No. An Initial IEP is in “PENDING” status when the IEP is locked but the Parent Consent-Initial Services has not been locked. Changes cannot be made until the Prior Written Notice is received and the event is locked. It is recommended that Initial IEPs not be locked until consent is received for this reason.

Why did I get an error message saying there are no available active/pending active plans when creating an IEP Amendment or IEP Correction event?

  • This message appears when the student’s IEP has expired. This can be seen on the Locked Events panel where the “ACTIVE” status is covered in red. In this case a new IEP must be completed and locked.

Can I complete an IEP Correction to correct an error in an amendment?

  • No. The IEP Correction event does not include the Amendment form which is required for all amendments. To correct your mistake, create a new IEP Amendment event.

Should the Plan Dates be changed in an amendment or correction?

  • The Plan Dates would only be changed in an IEP Correction if the Initiation Date was incorrect in the locked IEP.

    • In all other cases, including all amendments, the Plan Dates should not be changed. They are the Begin and End dates of the IEP, not the Amendment. If you receive error messages about the Plan Dates screen when checking compliance or locking the event, contact the Service Desk for assistance.

      • The date of the Amendment decision and initiation are noted on the IEP Amendment Form.

What is the correct way to change a goal or service in an amendment?

  • Other than the End Date, an existing goal or service should not be edited or deleted in an Amendment. The End Dates of the goals or services should be changed to indicate a goal or service will no longer be provided.

    1. If a goal is no longer going to be addressed change the End Date to the last day the goal will be implemented. Then, if needed, add a new goal.

    2. Never change the text of a goal in an Amendment. Changing the goal text will also change it in all progress reports – completed and future – for that goal. If the goal is being modified, change the End Date of the original goal to the last day it will be implemented as written, then add a new, revised goal to begin the next day.

    3. Do not change the details (Start Dates, time, setting, etc.) of an existing service. If a service will no longer be provided, or is changing, change the End Date to the last day it will be provided. Then, if needed, create a new service with the new information with the Start Date the day after the End Date. This maintains the history and integrity of the plan.

Is it OK to change or delete a goal or service in a Correction event because it was entered incorrectly?

  • Yes, as long as no progress reports were completed on the goal. Simply reopen the goal or service, make your change and save it. If you change a service you will also have to accept the LRE including a manual override if it was done in the original IEP.

Why do I have to ‘accept the LRE” again in the Amendment or Correction if I didn’t change the services?

  • The LRE information copies into the new event but if a Manual Override is required it is not complete. The Manual Override must be done again. Requiring the LRE to be “accepted” reminds users to review the LRE information and re-do a Manual Override if required.

Where are the Prior Written Notices from the IEP?

  • Amendment: Prior Written Notices do not copy to an IEP Amendment from the previous event (IEP, IEP Amendment, or IEP Correction). A Prior Written Notice is issued specifically for the event in which it was used. New Notices will be completed for the Amendment.

  • Correction: Prior Written Notices do copy from the IEP to an IEP Correction event.
