How to Use a Temporary Access Password (TAP)
This guide shows you how to use a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) to sign in to your account. You will need a TAP if you have lost, damaged, or replaced the device you rely on for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), such as a mobile phone with the Microsoft Authenticator app or a security key.
🔐 What is a Temporary Access Pass
A Temporary Access Pass (TAP) is a special, one-time-use code that lets you sign in when your usual Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) method isn't available. It acts as a temporary key to get you back into your account so you can set up a new, permanent MFA method on your new device.
A TAP gives you temporary access to update your MFA.
It's a short-lived login code that only works to access your Security Info settings. It is not a new password for your account. In some circumstances, you'll still need to sign in with your regular password first, then enter the TAP when prompted for MFA.
✅ What You Need
A computer or laptop with internet access
Your SSD login (email address)
A Temporary Access Pass provided by Technology Services
💻 How to Log In with a TAP
On your computer, open a web browser (e.g. Google Chrome).
Go to the following website: https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo
Sign in with your SSD email address and click Next.
Carefully type the TAP code that Technology Services gave you into the box and click Sign In.
Now that you're signed in, you can update your multifactor authentication methods. This means your TAP worked correctly.
⚙️ Update Your MFA Methods
To add your new phone or another MFA option, click on "+ Add sign-in method" and follow the prompts.
