MFA - How to Set Up a Security Key

This guide walks you through setting up a security key for your SSD account. You’ll use it to confirm your identity when signing in.

🔐 What is a Security Key

A security key adds a second layer of protection to your SSD account. When you sign in, you’ll be asked to insert the key into your computer and tap it when it lights up. This confirms that you are the one trying to access your account. Security keys offer a fast, secure way to verify your identity and are especially useful when signing in or after a password change. They also support newer sign-in methods like passwordless login, allowing you to access your SSD account without typing a password.

Security keys are not fingerprint readers. When you tap the key, it detects your touch using heat, not a fingerprint. No biometric or personal data is captured or stored.

You are responsible for your key and may be charged a fee if it is lost or damaged.

✅ What You Need

  • A computer with Google Chrome installed

  • Your SSD login (email address and password)

  • A security key issued by Technology

💻 Step 1: Sign in to the Security Info Portal

  1. On your computer, open Google Chrome.

  2. Go to this website: https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info

    1. Sign in with your SSD email if prompted.

🔑 Step 2: Add Your Security Key

  1. On the page, click the + Add sign-in method button.

  2. From the list, choose Security key.

  3. Select USB device and click Next.

  4. Click Next.

  5. Your device will redirect you to a new page. Please be patient while it loads.

🔧 Step 3: Set Up the Key

  1. Select Security key from the list, then click the Next button to continue.

  2. Click on OK button to continue setting up the security key.

  3. Click on OK button again to continue setting up the security key.

  4. Plug in your security key into a USB port on your computer.

  5. Create a PIN with 4+ digits, type it in both boxes, then click OK.

Do not use simple PINs like 1234, 0000, or repeating numbers. These are easy to guess.

  1. Touch the button on your security key when prompted to continue.

  1. Click on the OK button to confirm that your security key has been saved.

🏷️ Step 4: Name and Save Your Key

  1. Type a name for your security key, then click Next to continue (e.g. “Work Key”, “Keychain”).

  2. Click Done to finish setting up your security key.

  3. If your key appears in the list, setup is finished.

You’re all set! Your security key is now ready to use for sign-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I forget my security key PIN?

A: If you forget your security key PIN, the security key must be reset to use it again. All credentials on the key will be erased during the reset. After resetting, remove the lost or reset key from your MySignins | Security Info page.
